It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Helder Manuel Espinola, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left this world on January 26, 2025, at the age of 73. Born in Graciosa, Portugal, Helder's journey led him to Alamosa, Colorado, where he became a beloved member of the community.
Helder was a dedicated butcher and worked in the meat processing industry for over 35 years, most notably at Sanford Processing and Wal-Mart, where he retired after 17 years of service. His pride in his work was evident, and he was known for his strong work ethic, often putting his family's needs above his own.
In addition to his professional achievements, Helder served honorably in the Army after being drafted on March 17, 1972. His service to his country, despite being a non-citizen, exemplified his commitment and love for the freedoms we cherish.
A true outdoorsman at heart, Helder found joy in camping, fishing, and nurturing his beloved garden-a testament to his green thumb and passion for life. He embraced his Portuguese heritage and took pride in sharing traditions with his children and grandchildren. He was a jokester who knew when he liked someone and let that love shine brightly. Helder was a true provider, often sacrificing for the sake of his family. He loved his girls fiercely and this love extended to other family members as well, including his sister-in-laws. He will be remembered as a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Evelyn, whom he married on November 26, 1977. Together, they shared 48 beautiful years of life, adventure, and love.
Helder is survived by his wife, Evelyn Espinola; son Helder Jr.; daughter Sabrina Biggs; son Josiah Espinola-Spafford; brother David Espinola; sisters Lori Richert, Otilia Brun, Denise Espinola, and Fatima Espinola; along with beloved grandchildren Austin, Anessa, Alexia, Ayanna, and Lelia, and great-grandchild RiverJo and best friend Tim Biggs. Helder's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Cremation was selected and a private family service will be held at the First Christian Church in Alamosa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society to support the fight against cancer, a cause dear to his heart.
Helder Manuel Espinola will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his boundless love, caring spirit, and unwavering commitment to family and friends. May he rest in peace.
Helder was preceded in death by: his parents, Eduino Espinola and Laura Espinola, nephew, Jacob Espinola, brother-in-laws, Bobby Kernen and Bennie Kernen as well as his mother-in-law Alice Kernen.
